Understand Insulation Choices and Improve the Thermal Envelope


Join us to learn about the insulation choices available and ways to improve the building envelope while meeting Utah’s residential energy code. Come learn from one of the most in demand building science experts, Gord Cooke, Construction Instruction, who will provide examples of cost-effective approaches and he will demonstrate best practices to increase comfort and energy savings in single family homes. He will be joined by local code expert and former building official, Brent Ursenbach, West Coast Code Consultants, who will provide specifics about complying with Utah’s energy code, 2015 IECC.



Gord Cooke, Construction Instruction, is a trainer, author and industry consultant, Gord has been an effective and passionate educator and advocate for better building practices, improved indoor air quality and energy efficiency during the past two decades across North America. Gord brings to his training his technical and mechanical background, the logic and integrity of a professional engineer, and the passion of one committed to helping the residential construction industry build and sell better homes. Based on his homebuyer market research, Gord has pioneered a new training program designed to assist builders in marketing and selling their high performing, energy efficient homes by communicating their value to their customers.

Brent Ursenbach is the Energy/Mechanical Code Specialist at West Coast Code Consultants, ICC Combination Inspector, CBO and a LEED Accredited Professional.  He’s a recently retired Building Inspector from Salt Lake County. Previous experience includes a 33 year in HVAC contracting and 5 years adjunct facility at SLCC. He currently serves on the ICC- PMG Code Action Committee, PMG Interpretations, and Mechanical Code Dev Committees, ACCA Educational Institute-Standards Task Team, ACCA Manual Zr Advisory Committee, and the Utah Chapter ICC Code Development Committee.  He is Past President on the RMGA (Rocky Mountain Gas Association) Board of Directors and serves as Chair-Utah UBCC Mechanical Advisory Committee.  Brent has presented numerous seminars and classes on energy, mechanical and fuel gas code, as well as HVAC design principles. He received a B.S. in Sustainability Studies from U-Mass Amherst UWW.
